Digital Marketing vs Content Marketing

Digital Marketing vs Content Marketing

Digital marketing vs. content marketing – what should you focus on and why? To start narrowing down what kind of marketing strategy is best suited for your business, there are some fundamental definitions to know.

What is digital marketing?

According to Investopedia, “Digital marketing is the use of the internet to reach consumers. Digital marketing is a broad field, including attracting customers via email, content marketing, search platforms, social media, and more.”

With the rise of social media and the changing behaviour of how consumers (AKA everyday people like you and me) consume content, advertisers have seen a shift, with digital marketing gaining extreme popularity. With this popularity, brands are now fighting to get consumers’ attention and make their products or ads stand out in these saturated spaces.

Generally, one might think, why should I compete? The obvious answer is, of course, to stay in business, but you can also increase sales, generate leads, and build brand awareness through these mediums. This Hubspot blog summarizes it better than anyone else: “Marketing has always been about connecting with your audience in the right place and at the right time. Today, that means you need to meet them where they are already spending time: on the internet.” This can be through many forms of Digital Marketing, some of which include:

  • Email Marketing
  • Content Marketing
  • Search Engine Optimization
  • Google Advertising
  • Social Media Advertising

Now let’s talk about Content Marketing.

It is defined as “A type of marketing that involves creating and sharing online material (such as videos, blogs, and social media posts) that does not explicitly promote a brand but is intended to stimulate interest in its products or services.” For example, this article that you are reading right now on our blog is content marketing – content marketing is educational but not about selling products. A business offers this information so that you become loyal to the brand.

Content marketing can also include educational articles, ebooks, videos, podcasts, or playlists; some examples of this are:

Hubspot

We just cannot write an article about content marketing without mentioning Hubspot; their content marketing has been some of the best we’ve seen. This includes in-depth blog posts, conducting surveys and publishing reports or ebooks, and creating educational videos. They got all their bases covered.

GE

GE created an influencer marketing campaign for its wind turbines and jet engine business by getting Instagram influencers and superfans to tour their manufacturing facilities and take pictures with the hashtag #GEInstaWalk which was a massive success for them.

Glossier

The company used its cult-like following to take advantage of user-generated content to boost its brand: simply ingenious! They also have several free playlists and backgrounds to download on their website. With more than 1 million Instagram followers, they gotta be doing something right.

To sum up, content marketing is a form of digital marketing. Many companies use this strategy or a mix of digital marketing strategies to become the most authoritative source for their customers to find credible information. This earns their customer’s trust and, in turn, rewards the business with increased sales, brand awareness & customer loyalty.
